  • Notes

    • Molly Studenroth's "Lindsey, Goin, Studenroth" family tree at Ancestry.com gives his birthdate as 8 March 1793 and his date of marriage to Anna Woodruff as 4 Nov. 1819.

In a 23 July 1995 letter to me, Dorothy Gaines (410 Leyswood Dr., Greenville, SC 29615) tells me she's a descendant of DL, and that he was b. abt. 1790. According to Gaines, DL moved to Franklin Co., AL, with others from Spartanburg Co., SC, and got a land grant there in 1818. Gaines says that DL m. Anna, daughter of Joseph Woodruff and Anna Lindsey, and the family remained in Spartanburg Co. until after Anna Lindsey Woodruff's death. Anna Woodruff Lindsey died in Franklin Co., AL, in the 1840s, and Dennis died in the 1850s, according to Gaines, also in Franklin Co.

Note that in an undated pedigree chart, Dorothy Gaines gives 1793 as DL's date of birth. The chart shows Anna Woodruff b. 27 Dec. 1798 in Spartanburg Co., SC. Note that 1793 is the year of birth implied by the 1850 census, cited below.

On 22 March 1802, the Spartanburg Co. Commissioners of the Poor bound Mary's son by Dennis Lindsey, also named Dennis, to her husband William Lindsey Allen until he was of age (see SC MAG ANCESTRAL RESEARCH 9 [1981], 208).

DL was a private of Allston's 3d SC Regiment in War of 1812.

Betty Taylor (cited below) says that DL is in a Franklin Co., AL, land record in 1818, along with William Moore. This is evidently a reference to an 1818 patent to DL and Wm. Moore in Franklin Co. in twp. 6S R12W the SW 1/4. In Nov. 1818, WL and Wm. Moore also patented the w 1/2 of nw 1/4 twp. 6S R12W (which section for these grants?). Note, though, that Dennis seems to have stayed in SC up to the late 1820s, per the deed and court records from Spartanburg Co. cited below.

According to Olden Times of Colbert and Franklin Counties in AL, compiled by Joyce Dawson MITCHELL Volume III May 1993, p. 48-49, an article by Beatrice RUSSELL states that the Lindseys came to Franklin Co. AL from SC and settled in the Crooked Oak/Frankfort area.

This is apparently the DL of the 1820 census, Spbg. Co., p. 320--m:1/0/0/0/1; f: 0/1/0/0/0/1. One slave.

On 3 March 1821, a DL wit. the deed of land by James Hunt to Ephraim Drummond, Jr., of Spbg. Co., following a suit of Elisha Bobo vs. John Edwards for debt (Spbg. DB R, p. 341-2; see Pruitt, cited in file of Dennis Lindsey, son of Wm., p. 653). This Dennis could either be son of Dennis or of his brother Wm. Note that William Lindsey Allen's brother Matthew m. Rebecca Drummond, and had by her a son Ephraim Drummond Allen. Could Rebecca's father have been an Ephraim Drummond, and could the Jr. be her brother?

Spartanburg Co., SC, Ct. of Common Pleas (roll 977) minutes show that DL received judgment in his favor in 1823 on a 6 Dec. 1821 suit vs. Jacob Frey and Robert Peden. The suit involved a debt of Frey and Peden to Dennis Lindsey.

27 Feb. 1824, DL wit. the deed of John Burrough, attorney for Wm. Burrough of Decatur Co., AL, to Nathaniel Wofford of Spbg. Co., 112 acres on s. side of Ferguson's creek of Tyger River (Spbg. DB T, pp. 342-3; Pruitt, p. 780).

On 27 Sept. 1824, DL wit. the sale of land by John Burrough, attorney for Elizabeth and WM. Burrough of Decatur Co., AL, to Nathaniel Wofford, 115 acres on the south side of Ferguson's Creek of the Tyger River in Spbg. Co. (Spbg. Co. DB T, pp. 342-3; see Pruitt, cited in file of Dennis Lindsey, p. 780).

On 9-10 Feb. 1826, DL bought from his mother-in-law Anna Lindsey's estate a slave named Nancy.

On 22 Feb. 1827, DL sold to Benjamin L. Goodman of Spbg. Co. (the deed says only that DL was of "SC") for $400 100 acres on Ferguson's Creek in Spbg. Co. The land was bordered on the sw by William Rhodes and on the se by Nathaniel Wofford. Wit. were Wm. Otts and Thomas Bragg. DL signed. Otts gave oath on 22 Feb. 1827 to Philip Brewton, and the deed was recorded on 26 Feb. 1827.

Anna Lindsey renounced dower on 22 Feb. 1827 to Robert Lindsey (Spbg. DB T, p. 342). Note that this land was evidently being sold as the family prepared to move to AL after the death of Anna Lindsey Woodruff.

Cross index to Spbg. Co. deeds shows a deed dated 1827 of DL to Benjamin Goodman (DB T, p. 342).

      On 15 May 1828, Lindsey and William Moore, along with D. Lindsey, patented 80 acres in Franklin Co. in two. 6 S, R 12 W, S 14 (Credit Volume Pat. 127, p. 238).

Dennis Lindsey is on the 1840 census in Franklin Co., AL (house 252), with a male 10-15, a male 20-30, a male 40-50, a female under 5, and a female 30-40.

DL is on the 1850 census in Franklin Co., AL, dist. 6, p. 223 (774/774), 1 Jan. 1851. Listed as Dinnis Linsey. He is 57, farmer, b. SC. Wife Amanda is 20, and the couple had married during the year. She was also b. in SC, and no children are in the household. The following household is Dennis's son Robert with wife Mary. On the same page with Dennis is the family of his brother-in-law Riley Sparks (m. Eunice Woodruff), with several of his family members listed between him and Dennis.

Dennis is also on the 1850 state census of Franklin Co., AL, with 1 white male over 21, 1 white male over 45, and 1 white female over 21.

DL is on the 1855 AL census in Franklin Co., with 1 white male over 12, 1 white female over 21, and 1 white female under 21.

The July 1995 letter of Dorothy Gaines cited in file of Dennis Lindsey who married Anna Woodruff has FGS charts for DL's children Miles R., Robert, and Malissa, as well as an FGS chart for the family of DL, showing another child, Amanda. Unless otherwise noted, all information I have recorded about these children and their families is from this source.
